The Email He Never Sent

Aaron still remembers the email he drafted but never sent.

It stayed in his drafts folder for three days. Not finished, but complete enough to understand what it meant.

The message wasn’t angry. It wasn’t dramatic either.

Just clear.

Aaron and his friend had known each other for more than a decade. They had shared flats for a while, travelled together, and built the kind of history that allows long conversations to begin halfway through a thought.

For years, the friendship felt easy.

But that particular year carried a slightly different tone.

Small conversations sometimes felt competitive. Remarks that might once have passed unnoticed lingered longer than they should have.

Aaron found himself adjusting how he spoke.

He edited stories before telling them. Decided which details to include and which to leave out. The rhythm between them began to feel slightly uneven.

There wasn’t a single moment that caused it.

More a gradual accumulation.

An imbalance he couldn’t quite explain.

One evening, after a dinner that left him quieter than usual, Aaron opened his laptop.

He began typing.

The email described distance. Not dramatically, and not in a way that blamed anyone.

He wrote about feeling dismissed sometimes. About how the tone between them had shifted in ways that were difficult to articulate.

At the end of the message, he suggested taking some space.

Not permanently.

Just for a while.

He read the email twice.

Then he closed the laptop without sending it.

The following morning his phone lit up with a message from his friend. A link to something they had both been talking about earlier that week. Then a joke.

A few minutes later, an invitation to the gym.

Aaron replied as he normally would.

The email remained in his drafts.

Over the next few weeks, something softened. Not because they had a conversation about it.

Just time passing.

Different pressures appeared in both their lives. Different moods, different routines.

The sharpness Aaron had felt gradually faded.

The email, when he looked at it again, felt slightly disproportionate. Too formal for something that might simply pass.

He deleted it.

Quietly.

Years have passed since that moment.

The friendship continued.

They still speak easily. The competitive edge that once bothered him seems to have faded.

Or perhaps Aaron simply stopped noticing it.

Occasionally, when his friend describes him as steady — someone who is always there, someone who never wavers — Aaron feels a brief flicker of memory.

He remembers the draft.

And the moment he decided not to press send.

He does not regret keeping the friendship.

But he recognises that it survived something it never knew existed.

A moment that remained private.

A moment that passed without being spoken about.

Aaron understands now that loyalty is not always built on certainty.
