The Letters That Arrived After the Car Came Back

Confession Type  -

Friendship Fallout

Stories of Reddit. Ep. - 1

He Borrowed His Friend’s Car. Then the Fines Started Arriving.

It started as a small favour.

James had a friend whose car was supposedly in the shop. They asked if they could borrow his for a couple of days while it was being repaired. It didn’t seem like a big request.

They promised they would take care of it.
They said it would only be temporary.
They assured him the car would come back exactly the way it left.

So James agreed.

A few days later the car was returned. It looked fine. No dents, no scratches, nothing out of place. The exchange was quick, and James didn’t think much more about it.

Then a letter arrived.

It was a speeding fine.

At first he assumed it had to be a mistake. Maybe the camera had caught the wrong number plate. Maybe there had been some sort of error with the system.

But when James checked the date, it lined up exactly with the day his friend had the car.

He mentioned it to them.

They laughed it off and said it must have been some sort of mix-up. They told him not to worry and said they would cover it if it turned out to be real.

A few days later another letter arrived.

This one was a parking ticket.

Different place.
Different time.

But the same day the car had been borrowed.

James asked about it again.

This time the explanation changed.

The friend admitted they hadn’t been the only one driving the car. Apparently they had let someone else borrow it briefly to run a few errands.

They hadn’t asked James beforehand.
They hadn’t mentioned it when they returned the car.

Over the next week, more notices began showing up in the post.

Toll charges.
Late payment reminders.
Warnings about unpaid fines.

When everything was added together, the total was already in the hundreds.

James asked the friend to reimburse him.

At first the replies slowed down.

Then they stopped entirely.

Messages were left unread.
Phone calls went unanswered.

Eventually James shared the situation online, trying to figure out how things had ended up this way.

Many of the responses focused on the same question.

If someone borrows a car, why lend it to someone else without asking? And if tickets start appearing, why not deal with them immediately instead of letting them pile up?

The final update was short.

The fines were eventually paid.

The friend blocked him.

And they haven’t spoken since.
