His Coworker Undermined Him After the Promotion
This story began with a promotion.
Caleb and Ryan worked on the same team and had been colleagues for some time. When a new internal role opened within the department, both of them applied.
Their experience levels were similar. They worked on the same projects, attended the same interviews, and went through the same selection process.
When the final decision came back, Caleb was offered the position.
Ryan congratulated him.
He shook Caleb’s hand, told him the promotion was well deserved, and seemed supportive in front of the rest of the team.
For the first few weeks, nothing seemed unusual.
Work continued as normal.
Then small things started to change.
Files Caleb expected to find in shared folders were suddenly missing. Deadlines were mentioned that he hadn’t seen before. Emails that were supposedly sent never appeared in his inbox.
At first Caleb assumed it was just confusion.
But one day a client forwarded him a message.
The email had been sent by Ryan.
The wording was careful and indirect. It suggested that Caleb might be overwhelmed in the new role and that he might not yet be fully ready for the responsibilities.
It wasn’t outright criticism.
Just enough to raise doubts.
Caleb confronted Ryan about it.
Ryan didn’t deny sending the messages.
Instead, he said he believed he was protecting the team. He suggested the promotion decision may have been rushed and said he was simply being honest about the situation.
Caleb brought the issue to management.
They reviewed the emails and the communication with the client.
Ryan explained that his comments had been misunderstood and that he had never intended to cause problems.
That evening Caleb shared the story online.
Many of the responses focused on one particular detail.
Not the promotion itself.
But the fact that Ryan had congratulated him publicly while quietly undermining him in private.
The final update was brief.
Ryan was eventually moved to another team.
The project continued without interruption.
And the two of them stopped speaking altogether.
