The Rent That Never Reached the Landlord
This story began with a shared flat.
Daniel had been living with the same flatmate for just over a year. The arrangement had always been straightforward. Rent was split evenly, bills were shared, and neither of them had ever missed a payment.
Everything had worked smoothly.
Then one afternoon Daniel received an email from the landlord.
It looked like a routine message at first, just a reminder that the rent hadn’t been received.
Daniel assumed it had to be some kind of mistake. His half of the payment left his account automatically every month, and this time had been no different.
He checked his bank statement.
The payment had gone through exactly as expected.
Confused, he asked his flatmate if there had been some kind of issue with the transfer.
The reply came back quickly.
They said it had already been sorted. Apparently there had been a mix-up somewhere, but it wasn’t anything to worry about.
Daniel accepted the explanation and moved on.
A week later another email arrived.
This one sounded different.
It mentioned late fees. It warned about further steps if the balance remained unpaid. The tone was far less relaxed than the first message.
Daniel asked his flatmate about it again.
This time the explanation changed.
The flatmate admitted they had been short on money that month. Instead of sending the full rent payment to the landlord, they had used the money for something else.
They said they had planned to replace it before anyone noticed.
But they hadn’t managed to do it in time.
Over the following days the situation became more complicated.
Additional payments were missed. Utility bills began showing warnings. Letters started appearing at the door.
Daniel tried pushing for clearer answers.
The responses slowed down.
Then they stopped altogether.
Not long after that, the flatmate stopped coming home.
Eventually Daniel discovered that the landlord had already started formal proceedings to recover the unpaid rent.
That evening he shared the story online.
Most of the responses focused on one particular detail.
Not the financial problems.
But the fact that the rent money had been taken and used for something else without Daniel ever being told.
The final update was brief.
Daniel ended up covering the outstanding rent himself.
The flatmate never returned to the flat.
And the security deposit was lost in the process.
