Her Neighbour Was Using Her Spare Key
This story began with a spare key.
Nina had given her neighbour Paul a copy of the key to her flat. The arrangement was meant to be practical. It was there in case of emergencies, to bring in packages if she was away, or to water plants when needed.
At first, it worked exactly as expected.
Parcels that might have been left outside were safely placed inside the flat. A few small favours were handled without any problems.
Then one evening Nina came home earlier than planned.
As she approached the door, something immediately felt strange.
The lights were on.
She could hear music playing from inside.
When she opened the door and stepped into the flat, she found Paul standing in the kitchen.
He wasn’t alone.
Two other people were there as well. There were drinks on the counter and plates of food laid out as if they had been there for a while.
Everyone looked surprised to see her.
Paul tried to explain the situation quickly. He said he thought she would still be out for the evening and that they were just spending some time there because it was quiet.
According to him, it wasn’t a big deal.
Nina asked a simple question.
Why was he inside her flat at all?
Paul admitted that he sometimes used the key when he needed space or when the building was quieter.
She asked how often that had happened.
He didn’t give a clear answer.
Later that night Nina looked around more carefully.
Food from the cupboards was missing. Glasses had been used and left on the table. Even the cushions on the sofa had been moved around.
It was clear that the flat had been used more than once.
Nina asked Paul to return the spare key.
At first he laughed as if the request was unnecessary.
Then he became defensive.
He said she was overreacting and suggested that neighbours should be able to trust each other.
That evening Nina shared the story online.
Many of the responses focused on one particular detail.
Not the spare key itself.
But the fact that her home had been treated like a shared space without her ever knowing.
The final update was short.
Nina changed the locks.
Paul stopped speaking to her.
And the spare key was never mentioned again.
