The Rota That Changed After the Shift

Stories of Reddit. Ep. - 8

She Covered a Shift — and Was Never Paid

This story began with a small favour at work.

Maya had been asked by a coworker if she could cover a shift one evening. It didn’t sound like a big deal. Just a single shift that needed filling.

She agreed to help.

The evening itself was uneventful. She showed up, worked the hours, and finished the shift as expected.

Later that night, though, she received a message from another coworker asking how the shift had gone.

Maya was confused.

That coworker wasn’t supposed to be on the rota for that evening.

Out of curiosity, Maya opened the schedule to check.

Her name wasn’t there.

At some point the shift had been changed.

Not through a manager.
Not through the usual system.

Someone had edited the rota.

Her name had been removed, and another coworker’s name had been added in its place.

Maya had worked the entire shift, but according to the schedule she hadn’t been there at all.

The next day she brought it up.

The coworker whose name appeared on the rota didn’t seem particularly concerned. They said they had assumed it would be fine. They suggested it worked out better that way and that they didn’t think it really mattered.

Unfortunately, payroll did see a problem.

When Maya checked the system, there was no record of her working that shift.

The rota showed someone else’s name.

When she asked for the hours to be corrected, the coworker stopped responding to her messages.

She raised the issue with her manager, hoping it could be fixed.

But the answer wasn’t helpful.

The manager explained that they couldn’t change recorded hours without proof. The schedule in the system already showed someone else assigned to the shift.

Maya tried showing screenshots of earlier messages and conversations.

It didn’t make a difference.

The rota had already been edited.

That evening Maya shared the story online.

Many of the responses focused on one particular detail.

Not just the unpaid shift.

But the fact that her name had been removed from the schedule entirely without her knowing.

The final update was brief.

The hours were never paid.

The coworker began avoiding her at work.

And from that point on, Maya stopped agreeing to favours when people asked her to cover shifts.
