He Lied About Why He Needed the Shift Off

This story began with a shift swap.

Aaron worked with a small team where covering shifts for each other wasn’t unusual. If someone had an appointment or something important come up, coworkers would often help out.

One day a colleague asked Aaron if he could take one of their shifts.

They said they had an important interview and needed the time off. It was only one day, and the request sounded reasonable.

Aaron agreed.

The swap went through without any problems. The schedule was updated, and Aaron worked the shift as planned.

During the day another coworker mentioned something casually while they were talking.

They asked Aaron how the interview had gone.

Aaron paused.

He hadn’t been to an interview.

That was the first moment he realised something wasn’t quite right.

Later that evening he came across photos online.

They showed the coworker whose shift he had covered.

They were out for drinks. Spending the day with friends. The caption talked about finally getting some time off.

There was no mention of an interview.

When Aaron asked them about it later, the coworker didn’t deny what had happened.

They said plans had changed during the day. They described it as not being a big deal and suggested they probably would have done the same thing if the roles were reversed.

They hadn’t mentioned the change beforehand.

They hadn’t explained it afterward either.

A week later the same coworker asked Aaron for another shift swap.

This time he declined.

The reaction was immediate.

Replies became short. Conversations at work felt colder. There were quiet comments about how some people weren’t very good “team players.”

That evening Aaron shared the story online.

Many of the responses focused on one particular detail.

Not the coworker taking a day off.

But the fact that the favour had been agreed to under false pretences.

The final update was brief.

Aaron stopped agreeing to shift swaps completely.

The coworker stopped asking.

And things at work remained slightly awkward after that.
