The Weekend That Was Supposed to End Sunday

They Extended the Trip Without Asking

This story began with a babysitting favour.

Rachel had agreed to watch a relative’s children for the weekend. The arrangement sounded simple enough. Just two nights while the parents were away, with the kids being picked up on Sunday morning.

The drop-off went smoothly.

Instructions were explained, emergency numbers were shared, and everyone seemed appreciative that Rachel had agreed to help.

The first night was busy but manageable.

The kids were loud, as children often are, but nothing out of the ordinary happened. By the end of the evening Rachel was tired, but the plan was still clear — one more night and the parents would return.

The second night was harder.

By Sunday morning Rachel was already exhausted but ready for the weekend to be over.

Except no one arrived.

There was no message.

No phone call.

An hour passed.

Then another.

Eventually Rachel managed to get through to the parents. The explanation came quickly.

They had decided to extend their trip by one more night. They assumed it wouldn’t be a problem and said they would return Monday morning instead.

They hadn’t asked beforehand.

They hadn’t warned her.

Rachel didn’t have much choice at that point, so she continued looking after the children.

Monday morning arrived.

But instead of a pickup, another message came through.

There were traffic delays. Work issues had apparently come up. Then the messages stopped entirely.

By Monday evening Rachel was rearranging her own schedule. Plans were cancelled, and she began asking others for help managing the situation.

Late that night the parents finally returned.

There was no apology.

Instead, the mood was casual. They joked about how tired everyone looked after the long weekend.

Rachel shared the story online later that evening.

Most of the responses focused on one specific part of the situation.

Not the difficulty of caring for the children.

But the fact that the original favour had quietly been extended without her permission.

The final update was brief.

Rachel declined every babysitting request that came after that weekend.

The family wasn’t happy about it.

And the favour that was supposed to last one weekend was never mentioned again.
